The <strong>slope of a line formula<\/strong> uses two points on the line:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>m = (y\u2082 \u2212 y\u2081) \/ (x\u2082 \u2212 x\u2081)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where (x\u2081, y\u2081) and (x\u2082, y\u2082) are any two points on the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What slope actually means<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Slope measures how steep a line is. Specifically, it measures the <strong>rise over run<\/strong>: how much the line goes up (rise) for every unit it moves to the right (run).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A positive slope means the line goes up from left to right<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A negative slope means the line goes down from left to right<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A slope of zero means the line is horizontal (flat)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An undefined slope means the line is vertical (the formula would divide by zero)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example 1 \u2014 finding slope from two points<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Find the slope of the line passing through (2, 3) and (6, 11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pick (x\u2081, y\u2081) = (2, 3) and (x\u2082, y\u2082) = (6, 11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>m = (y\u2082 \u2212 y\u2081) \/ (x\u2082 \u2212 x\u2081) m = (11 \u2212 3) \/ (6 \u2212 2) m = 8 \/ 4 m = 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The line has a slope of 2. For every 1 unit you move right, the line goes up 2 units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common mistake<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Switching the order of x and y. The slope is rise over run, which means y on top and x on bottom \u2014 <em>not<\/em> the other way around. A surprisingly common error is to write m = (x\u2082 \u2212 x\u2081) \/ (y\u2082 \u2212 y\u2081), which gives the reciprocal of the actual slope. Sketch the two points on graph paper if you&#8217;re not sure; the formula always matches what your eyes see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where the point slope formula comes from<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding the derivation matters because students who memorise the point slope formula in isolation tend to forget it under pressure. Students who understand <em>why<\/em> it works can rebuild it in seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with the slope of a line formula:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>m = (y \u2212 y\u2081) \/ (x \u2212 x\u2081)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This says: for any point (x, y) on the line and any fixed point (x\u2081, y\u2081) on the line, the slope between them is m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now multiply both sides by (x \u2212 x\u2081):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>m \u00d7 (x \u2212 x\u2081) = y \u2212 y\u2081<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flip it around to put y \u2212 y\u2081 on the left:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>y \u2212 y\u2081 = m(x \u2212 x\u2081)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the point slope formula. It&#8217;s just the slope formula rearranged. Every time you use it, you&#8217;re really using the slope formula in disguise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use the point slope formula \u2014 worked examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example 2 \u2014 straight application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Write the equation of the line that passes through (3, 5) with slope 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plug into y \u2212 y\u2081 = m(x \u2212 x\u2081): y \u2212 5 = 4(x \u2212 3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the equation in point-slope form. Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the question asks for the equation in slope-intercept form (y = mx + b), expand it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>y \u2212 5 = 4(x \u2212 3) y \u2212 5 = 4x \u2212 12 y = 4x \u2212 12 + 5 y = 4x \u2212 7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Same line, different form. The slope is still 4 and the y-intercept is \u22127.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example 3 \u2014 when you only have two points<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Find the equation of the line passing through (1, 2) and (5, 14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 1: find the slope using the slope of a line formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>m = (14 \u2212 2) \/ (5 \u2212 1) = 12 \/ 4 = 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 2: pick one of the two points (it doesn&#8217;t matter which) and use the point slope formula. Let&#8217;s use (1, 2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>y \u2212 2 = 3(x \u2212 1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 3 (optional): expand to slope-intercept form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>y \u2212 2 = 3x \u2212 3 y = 3x \u2212 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both points should satisfy this equation. Check with (5, 14): 3(5) \u2212 1 = 14. \u2713<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example 4 \u2014 with negative slope and a negative coordinate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Write the equation of the line passing through (\u22122, 7) with slope \u22123.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful with the signs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>y \u2212 7 = \u22123(x \u2212 (\u22122)) y \u2212 7 = \u22123(x + 2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expanding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>y \u2212 7 = \u22123x \u2212 6 y = \u22123x + 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The double negative trips up students. (x \u2212 (\u22122)) becomes (x + 2). Always rewrite double negatives explicitly before expanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slope formula intercept \u2014 converting between forms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>slope formula intercept<\/strong> form \u2014 y = mx + b \u2014 is the form most Grade 9 students are most comfortable with. Going between point-slope and slope-intercept is something you should be able to do without thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From point-slope to slope-intercept<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with: y \u2212 y\u2081 = m(x \u2212 x\u2081)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Distribute m on the right<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add y\u2081 to both sides<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simplify<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the conversion. Example: y \u2212 5 = 4(x \u2212 3) becomes y = 4x \u2212 12 + 5, which simplifies to y = 4x \u2212 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From slope-intercept to point-slope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with: y = mx + b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point (0, b) is on the line (it&#8217;s the y-intercept). So plug (0, b) into the point slope formula:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>y \u2212 b = m(x \u2212 0)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This simplifies to y = mx + b, which is back where we started. The two forms are mathematically equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, the point-slope form is easier when you have <em>any<\/em> random point on the line. Slope-intercept form is easier when you specifically have the y-intercept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When EQAO asks for one form vs the other<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>EQAO Grade 9 questions don&#8217;t always specify which form to use. Common phrasings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Write the equation of the line&#8221; \u2014 usually expects slope-intercept form (y = mx + b)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Find an equation of the line&#8221; \u2014 either form is acceptable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Express in standard form&#8221; \u2014 convert to Ax + By = C with integer coefficients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Write in the form y = mx + b&#8221; \u2014 explicit, must use slope-intercept<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When in doubt, write the answer in slope-intercept form. These are the edge cases where the formula breaks down, because dividing by 0 isn&#8217;t defined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parallel lines, for contrast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two lines are <strong>parallel<\/strong> if they have the <em>same<\/em> slope and never intersect. You can check: its slope is \u22121\/2, and 2 \u00d7 (\u22121\/2) = \u22121. \u2713<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a classic EQAO Grade 9 Level 3 question. Students who know the slope perpendicular formula cold can solve it in under two minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special cases \u2014 horizontal and vertical lines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two slope situations break the standard formulas, and they appear regularly on EQAO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Horizontal lines (slope = 0)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A horizontal line has slope 0. Its equation is always y = c, where c is the y-coordinate of any point on the line.
