The so – called “fixed mindset” phenomenon is particularly prominent in the American K12 education system. This is the belief that students’ abilities and talents are innate and difficult to change.

However, this view not only lacks scientific evidence but also has a negative impact on students’ overall development.

The Fixed Mindset in American Education

In American K12 education, the fixed mindset is widespread. Teachers and parents often unconsciously categorize students as “gifted” or “less capable” from an early age. For example, in some schools, students who perform well in initial tests are placed in advanced classes, while those with lower scores are left in regular classes. This division is based on the assumption that students’ abilities are static. According to American Psychological Association research, this fixed mindset can lead to students losing motivation to learn and grow. They may believe that their efforts won’t change their “predetermined” abilities.

The Lack of Scientific Basis

Modern neuroscience has shown that the brain is highly plastic. This means that the human brain can change and develop throughout life. In fact, learning and experience can create new neural connections and strengthen existing ones. As stated in Britannica’s entry on neuroscience, the idea that a person’s abilities are fixed at birth is a fallacy. Students who are labeled as having limited abilities can actually improve significantly if provided with the right learning environment and support. For instance, with targeted tutoring and a positive learning atmosphere, students can break through the barriers set by the fixed mindset.

Therefore, it is crucial to change this cultural concept in the American education system. Educators and parents should work together to build an educational environment based on a growth mindset. This involves believing that all students have the potential to learn and grow, regardless of their initial performance. By promoting a growth mindset, we can encourage students to take risks, learn from failures, and continuously improve themselves.
